Position Overview:

Defining, communicating and implementing a clear strategy for the RSA Canada’s Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) business, aligned to our Commercial Insurance strategic direction. The SME strategy will reflect RSA’s overall strengths as well as the Company’s local market opportunities, emerging competitive pressures and the advantages that can be gained from its present business and market position. This role reports to the Senior Vice President, Commercial Insurance and is a National role that could be based at any Canadian RSA office.

What you will achieve in this role:

• Providing input and strategic direction pertaining to market opportunities and challenges, capital investment and branding issues related to the SME commercial business distributed through brokers;
• Developing and, where required, attracting a team capable of leading the business unit to strong results in its selected areas of strategic focus;
• Establishing appropriate volume, revenue and profit objectives, and ensuring appropriate plans and performance measures are developed to achieve them;
• Working with brokers and other distribution channels to ensure the SME’s suite of products and services are competitively packaged in the marketplace and meet the needs of the end consumer;
• Assessing and combating competition in key commercial market segments;
• Maintaining relationships with regulatory bodies which impact the future and success of the specialty business units;
• Anticipating strategic direction required to maintain high performance within the changing competitive environment, changing consumer behavior and increasingly transparent marketplace. Consistently anticipating risks and opportunities outside of the distribution channel;
• Developing a constructive and collaborative relationship with the SVP, Commercial Insurance, key internal stakeholder and colleagues within Canada and Group;
• Establishing a positive and persuasive leadership profile within the Company and with its stakeholders;
• Refining and articulating a long-term vision and strategy for the specialty business that responds to the changing demands of the marketplace while capitalizing on the Company’s strong franchise in Canada and the priority of consistently achieving results; and,
• Quickly assessing and leading the operational changes required to solidify a new model of efficiency and profitability. This will include identifying new ways of segmenting the business and reducing cost of delivery through outsourcing, developing web business, etc. Concurrently, keeping the brokers on side during this process and continuing to influence the regulatory environment.

What you bring to this role:

• Minimum ten (10) years of experience in business leadership, ideally in a multi-national business;
• Demonstrated financial acumen with prior P & L responsibility;
• Comprehensive knowledge of RSA strategy, business models and international operations;
• Excellent skills in work planning and organization, process management, project management, people management, relationship management, communication, and use of relevant software and technologies.
• Bilingual English/French commucation skills are considered an asset.

Education
• Master’s Degree in Business/Management Studies or related field
• Related training in insurance studies. CIP and/or CRM Designation or similar.
