Position Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Insurance Defence Lawyer with litigation experience to join our new in-house legal department reporting to the Director of Legal Claims. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in personal injury law and accident benefits, either defence or plaintiff. Counsel will defend assigned files representing RSA or its policyholders in tort, property, accident benefits and general insurance litigation matters.

What you will achieve in this role

Counsel will be responsible for the defence of bodily injury, accident benefit and property claims in an in-house setting.

• You bring experience in handling complex claims and provide a solutions oriented approach to dealing with your files
• You are passionate about building relationships and mentoring others as you utilize your skills to grow strong relationships with other lines of business and junior counsel in the department
• You are an expert at legal strategizing, conducting discoveries, arbitrations, trials, motions, settlement negotiations, mediations, and similar proceedings.
• You are well versed in coverage issues as you research liability and damages to prepare legal opinions
• You are able to draft legal documents, pleadings, motions, and factums
• Your strong collaboration and communication skills will be utilized as you work closely with claims representatives and insured clients to arrive at cost effective resolutions
• Your creativity will show as you prepare material for and conduct presentations on changes in the law for the company

What you bring to this role

• Completion of law school with a Bachelors of Law (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) and admission to the Bar in Ontario.
• Minimum of 6 years post-call experience as a lawyer in Ontario.
• Background in insurance defence litigation, including personal injury and accident benefit claims
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work productively under pressure and deliver business results.
• Strong interpersonal & client service skills
• Trial or Arbitration experience
